About Us

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department leads in healthcare innovation by combining engineering principles with biological systems. This interdisciplinary field merges engineering design with medical sciences to enhance healthcare treatment. Biomedical engineering spans six major specializations, each focusing on different aspects of healthcare and medical technology.
- Biomaterials. Focuses on developing materials compatible with biological systems for implants, prosthetics, drug delivery, and tissue engineering.
- Biomechanics. Applies mechanics to understand biological systems and design devices for orthopedics, rehabilitation, and movement analysis.
- Bioinstrumentation. Creates devices that detect and interpret biological signals, such as glucose monitors and wearable health sensors.
- Medical Imaging & Bio-signal Processing. Advanced imaging technologies and bio-signal analysis for better disease diagnosis and treatment, including MRI, CT scans, and ECG.
- Rehabilitation Engineering. Designs assistive technologies like prosthetics and mobility aids to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
- Cell, Tissue Engineering, and Genetic Engineering. Focuses on creating artificial organs, regenerative therapies, and advanced wound-healing techniques.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at MIST, established in 2014, introduced the country’s first undergraduate program. The B.Sc. program began on February 1, 2015, with 41 students, and the M.Sc. program started on November 4, 2015, with 5 students. Today, the department has 145 B.Sc. students and 42 M.Sc. students. a. To provide quality education in the emerging interdisciplinary field of Biomedical Engineering.
b. To implement a modern academic curriculum that develops strong biomedical engineers.
c. To accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies in the lab.
d. To improve the quality of life for people in Bangladesh using knowledge and skills from modern science.
e. To utilize up-to-date teaching and learning facilities to advance healthcare technologies

a. To be a center of excellence, providing advanced quality education in science, engineering, and technology, and developing diverse, high-quality leaders and professionals.
b. To conduct innovative research that addresses national and global needs and challenges, advancing cutting-edge healthcare technologies.

Graduate: MSc/MEngg in Biomedical Engineering
Short Courses: Depending on the requirements of the students, the department organizes short courses designed to complement the core course curriculum of the students. Recent short courses include "Introducing Students to Programming using MATLAB", and "SOLIDWORKS Designing for Biomedical Engineers".
Workshops: The department frequently holds workshops designed to enhance the practical skills of students and introduce them to the technical aspects of many sub-disciplines of Biomedical Engineering. Students are subject to a hands-on approach where active participation is encouraged. Recent workshops include the Workshop on Medical Imaging.
Faculties
Currently, the Department of Biomedical Engineering boasts a group of highly professional faculty members who have extensive experience and expertise in a wide range of various Biomedical Engineering sub-disciplines. Additionally, guest faculties from different renowned institutions and a wide range of expertise take specialized courses as well as conduct thesis supervision. The faculties come from diverse prior professional exposure from institutions including BUET, Dhaka University, etc.

Library
The MIST Central Library houses more than a hundred books dedicated to the BME Department, along with a growing collection of thesis volumes from previous students. New titles are regularly procured based on both faculty and student recommendations, ensuring that the resources stay aligned with academic and research needs. The library is well-utilized by students and faculty alike, serving not only as a reliable hub for coursework but also as a valuable space for conducting research and project work. The BME Department receives strong support from the central library in accessing materials, journals, and reference texts.
Alongside the central facility, the department maintains its own BME Departmental Library. This smaller, course-focused library supplements the main collection with essential textbooks, lab manuals, reference books, and frequently used materials specific to our curriculum. It offers convenient access for students between classes, supports quick study sessions, and helps reduce the pressure on central resources. Together, the central and departmental libraries create a well-rounded academic support system for BME students.
Research, Publication and Projects
The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a diverse range of research opportunities for both students and faculty, fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Research areas within the department span across biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, drug development and delivery, cell and tissue engineering, and biomedical sensors.
The department is supported by a team of highly dedicated and experienced faculty members who actively supervise research activities and mentor students. Their collective efforts have led to significant contributions in the form of publications in reputed journals, presentations at national and international conferences, and chapters in academic books.
Current research initiatives are strategically aligned with addressing pressing healthcare challenges, particularly those relevant to the local and national context. The department remains committed to advancing biomedical science and technology through impactful, solution-oriented research.
Visits, Conferences and Seminars
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at MIST has consistently upheld its dedication to promoting excellence in biomedical research, academic enrichment, and collaboration with industry stakeholders since its establishment in 2015. The department has organized a series of significant events, including the international conference BICoBs-2016 and the observance of World Birth Defects Day in 2019, which earned MIST a platinum membership for its contributions. In 2019, it also hosted the country's first-ever Job Fair for Biomedical Engineers.
The momentum continued with "Anuronon 2022," the most significant national event for biomedical engineers in Bangladesh, featuring competitions like Memory Competition, Design Challenge, Project Competition, and Poster Presentation. Further emphasizing practical training, the department conducted a Workshop on Biomedical Imaging in August 2019. In 2020, a webinar on 'Biosafety for Clinical and Public Health' was organized to address safety protocols in laboratories and hospitals. The department also held a Seminar on the Medical Equipment and Device Industry in collaboration with BIDA in March 2022.
In October 2022, a Training Programme on Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy was conducted to enhance knowledge on quality assurance and maintenance of medical imaging systems. These initiatives icluding underscore the department's dedication to fostering academic excellence, practical skills, and industry engagement in the field of biomedical engineering.
Achievements
The Department of Biomedical Engineering has continued to demonstrate excellence in academic and research activities, even amidst global challenges. Faculty and students have actively participated in prestigious international forums, including the International Clinical Engineering & Health Technology Management Congress (ICEHTMC) held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA, where their contributions were recognized with international awards.
At the national level, the department has earned accolades such as the Graduate Fellowship awarded by the Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements (BRiCM). Furthermore, the department has strengthened its collaborative efforts through initiatives like the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ANKUR and MIST. It has also organized prominent national events, such as Anuronon, short courses on applications of deep learning and the fundamentals of CFD, showcasing its commitment to academic engagement and innovation.
Our Alumni
The BME Department takes immense pride in its remarkable journey, having successfully graduated 260 talented individuals from the first seven batches of the undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Program. These graduates have gone on to carve inspiring paths, both locally and globally, showcasing the excellence and versatility of their education. Many have pursued advanced studies in prestigious institutions across the USA, France, Finland, Germany, Malaysia, and Australia, while others have chosen to further their academic pursuits within the country.
Our graduates have embarked on transformative careers, emerging as pioneers in the field of biomedical engineering in Bangladesh, equipped with a strong foundation and a vision for innovation. They have secured prominent roles in academia, engineering, and research, contributing to esteemed organizations such as MIST, JMI Group, CMED Health Ltd., and JBF Digital Trading Co., Ltd. Additionally, many have made significant strides as researchers in the R&D sectors of leading institutions and universities, driving advancements in healthcare technology and engineering solutions. The accomplishments of our graduates stand as a testament to the department's commitment to fostering excellence, innovation, and leadership in biomedical engineering, shaping a brighter future for the nation and the world.
Einthoven Club
The MIST Einthoven Club was founded in 2017 by students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST).
The name “Einthoven” is inspired by the conceptual inverted equilateral triangle formed by three limb leads in electrocardiography—positioned at the two shoulders and the pubis with the heart at the center—named in honor of Willem Einthoven.
The club is composed of passionate individuals dedicated to advancing the biomedical field by developing innovative solutions towards contemporary healthcare challenges in Bangladesh. Driven by this mission, the club has consistently organized seminars to promote knowledge sharing and in-depth discussions on issues faced by both patients and healthcare providers in hospitals and related institutions. Our members are committed to applying their knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s healthcare system. Club Activities
Extra-Curricular Activities
The BME department at MIST has a rich tradition of fostering student talent beyond academics, with students excelling in cultural competitions, sports, and debates on both national and international stages.
Cultural Competitions: BME students have showcased remarkable achievements in various cultural arenas. In 2020, a BME student secured the first position in the Recitation category and was honored as the best female performer, marking an impressive milestone. The years 2022 and 2023 continued this legacy with achievements in Rabindra Sangeet, Recitation, and a second-place finish in the Drama Competition. In 2024, the department celebrated wins in Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, Recitation, and Modern Song, further highlighting the diverse cultural skills nurtured in the BME community.
Debate: Debate has been another area where BME students have excelled. In 2023, the department achieved the Runners-Up position in an intense debate competition, showcasing their oratory and analytical skills. This accomplishment not only highlighted their prowess in public speaking but also their ability to tackle complex topics thoughtfully and persuasively.
Hult Prize: One of the most notable achievements was a student odf BME department’s success in the Hult Prize in 2023, where they emerged as the Campus Champions. The Hult Prize is a prestigious international competition that encourages students to tackle pressing global issues through innovative ideas, and this accomplishment reflects the department’s commitment to nurturing socially conscious and entrepreneurial-minded students.
Through these accomplishments in cultural events, debate, and international competitions, the BME department has built a vibrant and supportive environment that encourages students to pursue excellence in a variety of disciplines, developing well-rounded individuals prepared to make significant contributions both within and beyond their field.
